Best beaches in Santorini: Where to swim, sunbathe & explore
Santorini may not look like the postcard image of the best beaches in Greece, and that is exactly what makes its coast so fascinating.
Down at sea level, the island reveals a completely different side, filled with dark pebbles, charcoal-colored sand, red cliffs, and beaches that look almost otherworldly.
So, where should you go for a swim?
Some Santorini beaches are lively and fully organized, with sunbeds, water sports, and restaurants close to the shore. Others are quieter and better suited to a slow afternoon away from the crowds. Whether you want an easy beach day, a romantic lunch, or a family-friendly place with shallow water, there is an option for you.
Here are some of the best beaches in Santorini, along with the practical details you need before setting off.

Red Beach
Few beaches are as recognizable as Red Beach. It lies near Akrotiri, around 11–12 km from Fira, and the drive usually takes about 20 minutes.
Its rust-red cliffs and dark shore create an unforgettable landscape, but this is not the easiest beach for swimming. Access involves a rough path, and warnings may be in place because of unstable cliffs and falling rocks. Always follow local signs and safety advice. Many visitors admire the view from above or see the beach from the sea during a boat tour.
Facilities are limited, so bring water and sun protection. Afterwards, stop at a taverna in Akrotiri or visit the nearby archaeological site.
Perissa Beach
Looking for an easy-going, all-day beach? Perissa is one of the most practical choices. Located around 12 km from Fira, it can be reached in approximately 20 to 25 minutes by car. Direct public buses also run from Fira, making it one of the most convenient Santorini beaches for visitors without their own vehicle.
The long volcanic shore is well organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports and plenty of cafés, bars and tavernas. You can arrive with little planning and comfortably stay until evening.
One useful tip: dark sand becomes extremely hot under the midday sun. Sandals or water shoes will make the walk to the sea much easier.
Perivolos Beach
Just beyond Perissa, Perivolos offers a livelier and slightly more stylish version of the classic Santorini beach day. It is approximately 12 km from Fira, with the journey taking around 20 to 25 minutes, depending on summer traffic.
This is the place for beach clubs, loungers, cocktails, music and long lunches by the water. Water sports centers also offer activities such as paddleboarding and jet skiing. Prefer something calmer? The beach is long enough to include quieter sections away from the busiest venues.
During July and August, booking your sunbed in advance is a good idea. Parking is available nearby, but arriving early gives you more choice.

Kamari Beach
Kamari is one of the closest and most accessible options from Santorini’s capital. It sits around 7–8 km from Fira and takes roughly 15 minutes to reach by car. There are also frequent direct buses from Fira, as well as several parking areas close to the beach.
The coast is organized with loungers, umbrellas, diving centers and water sports. Behind it, a pedestrian promenade is lined with restaurants, cafés, shops and mini markets, so everything you need is within walking distance.
The pebbles can be uncomfortable, and the seabed can become fairly deep fairly quickly in some areas. Kamari also combines well with a visit to Ancient Thera or an evening at the open-air cinema.
Vlychada Beach
Vlychada is the beach to choose when the scenery matters just as much as the swim. Its tall, pale cliffs have been shaped by wind and erosion into unusual formations, giving the coastline an almost lunar appearance.
The beach is about 13 km from Fira and is easily reached by car, with parking available near the shore. Seasonal buses also connect Fira with Vlychada, although the stop may require a short walk.
The main section has loungers, umbrellas, and a café or beach bar, but the atmosphere becomes quieter as you continue along the coast. Near the small marina, you will also find restaurants where you can enjoy fresh fish and local dishes after swimming. Compared with Kamari and Perissa, Vlychada feels less commercial and leaves much more room for a peaceful afternoon by the sea.
Monolithos Beach
Travelling with children? Monolithos deserves a place near the top of your list. Located on Santorini’s eastern coast, it is around 25 to 30 minutes from Imerovigli by car.
Unlike several of the island’s steeper shores, Monolithos has fine dark sand, a gentle entrance and shallow water in many areas. Parts are organized with loungers and umbrellas, and nearby facilities may include tavernas, a playground and sports courts. Parking is also relatively easy.
It is quieter than Kamari and Perivolos, with fewer dining choices. Pack any family essentials you may need and enjoy the slower pace.

What to pack for a beach day in Santorini
Santorini’s volcanic coastline is beautiful, but it can also be hot and rugged. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and plenty of drinking water.
Sandals or water shoes are especially useful, as dark sand and pebbles heat up quickly. Add a towel, a light cover-up and perhaps some snorkeling gear.
Visiting a less organized beach? Pack snacks and an umbrella, and do not assume there will be showers, changing rooms or card payment everywhere. Check the wind forecast, road conditions and current bus timetable before leaving. Public buses operate mainly through Fira, so reaching the beaches from Imerovigli may involve a connection.
Most importantly, start early. The temperature is more comfortable, parking is easier, and the shoreline is calmer before the late-morning crowds arrive.
Where to stay while exploring the best beaches in Santorini
The beaches are spread around the southern and eastern parts of Santorini, but you do not need to stay directly on the coast to enjoy them. Pegasus Suites & Spa in Imerovigli offers a peaceful base above the caldera, just 1.5 km from Fira and within comfortable driving distance of the island’s main swimming spots.
After a day by the sea, returning to panoramic caldera views feels like discovering another side of Santorini. The hotel offers elegant accommodation and exclusive suites with private terraces, while many options also feature outdoor hot tubs or private pools overlooking the Aegean.
Cool off in the infinity pool, order a drink at the pool bar, or enjoy a restorative spa treatment. Later, savor Greek and Mediterranean-inspired dishes without leaving the hotel, accompanied by attentive, personalized service.
Swim on volcanic shores in the morning, explore the dramatic coastline in the afternoon, and watch the sunset from Imerovigli in the evening. Staying at Pegasus Suites & Spa allows you to experience both the beaches and the caldera, without having to choose between them.
